How to Keep Celery Fresher for Longer

Crunchy and crisp celery can make a cool, wholesome snack. However, if you ignore it too much, you'll end up with weak, dry stalks that nobody will find attractive. The best ways to store celery, whole or chopped, are covered in this article. Learn how to revive and revitalize limp celery as well.

How to Store Celery the Best Way

Moisture is essential for maintaining the freshness of celery. When keeping entire celery this way, the moisture is retained but the ethylene gas, which can cause spoiling, is allowed to escape.

This is What You'll Require:

  • Uncut, whole celery
  •  Aluminum foil

Instructions:

  •  First, throw away the plastic bag the celery was packaged in from the grocery shop. The celery will eventually deteriorate if it is stored in plastic bags because doing so will merely trap ethylene gas and allow moisture to escape.
  •  Tightly wrap your entire, uncut celery stick in aluminum foil, which works better than plastic to keep moisture in. However, you want to let the natural ethylene gas escape, so be careful not to crimp the foil pack's edges.
  • The wrapped celery can be kept for up to four weeks in your refrigerator's crisper drawer.

How to Keep Cut Celery in Storage

You will need to use a different storage strategy if you are storing pre-cut celery. Because cutting into celery releases part of its moisture, we advise storing it whole when first purchased. However, we acknowledge that it's nice to have pre-cut celery on hand for quick snacking. Here's how to prolong the shelf life of sliced celery.

  • Chopped celery stalks should be added to a big container with space for water.
  • Give the stalks a thorough submersion in water. Cover with a plastic wrap or lid. Just take them out of the water and give them a quick rinse when it's time to eat.
  • Every other day, replenish the water. This will keep celery fresh for up to two weeks.

How to Utilize Celery Limps

Even if your celery is past its prime, there are still plenty of uses for limp celery. It is great with dishes that change its texture. Think about braising it, slicing it for salad dressings, juicing it for smoothies, or pureeing it for soups like this cream of celery soup.

What to Look for When Buying Celery

There are two types of celery—the pale green "Pascal" head or bunch celery that is most familiar and the slender, stronger-flavored Chinese celery. Both the stalks and the aromatic, flavorful leaves of regular celery are edible. The celery heart refers to the inner ribs of the bunch. The heart is more tender than the outer stalks, with fewer tough strings.

When buying celery stalks, choose tight, firm bunches with fresh, healthy-looking leaves. The stalks should be straight and rigid and should snap when bent. Avoid stalks that splay out or have cuts or bruises.
